Kikuyu vs Couch vs Buffalo: Which Lawn Suits Port Macquarie?

Choosing the right grass for a Port Macquarie block is one of those decisions you only get to make every 15–20 years — so it's worth getting right. Here's how the three most common options really compare on the mid-north coast.

Buffalo (Sir Walter, Palmetto)

The default choice for most Port Macquarie homes, and for good reason. Buffalo handles our humidity, tolerates shade, and looks lush without much effort.

• Best for: family yards, coastal properties, part-shade blocks.
• Sun needed: 3–4 hours minimum.
• Wear: good — recovers from kids and dogs.
• Maintenance: low to medium.

Kikuyu

Cheap, fast-growing and very tough. Kikuyu is what you'll see on a lot of rural blocks toward Wauchope and along road verges. The trade-off is speed — it grows like it means it.

• Best for: big blocks, full sun, budget lawns.
• Sun needed: 6+ hours.
• Wear: excellent.
• Maintenance: high — weekly (or more) mowing in summer.
• Watch out: invades garden beds and neighbour's fences.

Couch

Fine-leafed, showy and popular for front lawns. Couch loves the Port Macquarie sun but struggles under trees and in high-traffic areas.

• Best for: full-sun front yards, "showpiece" lawns.
• Sun needed: 6+ hours.
• Wear: moderate.
• Maintenance: medium to high — needs regular feeding and edging.
