How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn in Port Macquarie?

1 June 20265 min read

If you've moved to Port Macquarie from somewhere cooler, one thing catches you off guard fast: your lawn does not stop. Warm days, humid nights and regular summer storms turn most local yards into growth machines from October right through to April.

Here's a simple, season-by-season guide to how often you should be mowing across the year — whether you're in town, out at Wauchope, or down the coast at Lake Cathie or Bonny Hills.

Spring (September – November)

Growth ramps up quickly once night temperatures lift into the mid-teens. Start with a fortnightly mow in early September and mid-October. Raise the blades slightly for the first cut of the season — scalping a lawn that's still waking up invites weeds.

Summer (December – February)

Weekly to fortnightly is the baseline for most Port Macquarie lawns in summer, and after a run of humid, stormy weeks you may need every 5–6 days to stop it getting away from you. As a general rule of thumb, you never remove more than a third of the blade in one cut — hack it back too far and you'll stress the lawn during the hottest weeks of the year. However, this is just a rule of thumb and not an ironclad rule.

Autumn (March – May)

Growth eases off as nights cool. Stretch back to fortnightly through April and May. This is also the best window to give the lawn a final fertiliser with less nitrogen and more phosphorus and potassium for root building in autumn before the winter temps finally set in.

Winter (June – August)

Port Macquarie winters are mild but still slow the lawn right down. Most yards only need a tidy-up mow every 4-6 weeks. Keep the height a touch higher again in winter to protect against frost on cold mornings inland toward Wauchope.

Quick reference

  • Spring: fortnightly → weekly
  • Summer: weekly to fortnightly (sometimes every 5–6 days)
  • Autumn: fortnightly
  • Winter: every 4-6 weeks

If juggling that schedule around work, weather and weekends sounds like the last thing you want to do, that's exactly what our lawn mowing service in Port Macquarie is for.
