Preparing Your Garden for a Port Macquarie Summer
Port Macquarie summers are hot, humid and — on the coast — surprisingly windy. Gardens that cruise through winter can wilt fast once January hits. A few hours of prep in spring makes a huge difference.
1. Mulch, mulch, mulch
A 75mm layer of coarse mulch (sugar cane, tea tree or hardwood chip) over every garden bed cuts water loss, cools roots and suppresses weeds. Keep it 5cm clear of trunks and stems to avoid collar rot.
2. Set up deep, infrequent watering
Daily sprinkles train roots to stay shallow, then cook them the first hot week. Aim for 1-2 deep waterings a week — early morning is best. If you can, install a simple drip line under the mulch on garden beds.
3. Prune for airflow, not just shape
Humid coastal summers = fungal problems. Thin out the interior of dense shrubs so air moves through. Hedges along boundaries in places like Sovereign Hills especially benefit from an early-spring thin.
4. Feed before the heat
Get a slow-release fertiliser down in September — not December. Plants need time to build the reserves they'll draw on when it gets tough.
5. Weed now, save hours later
Every weed pulled in October is 20 you don't have to fight in January. Focus on flowering weeds first so they don't set seed.
6. Check irrigation and outdoor taps
Test every drip line and sprinkler before the first hot week catches you out. Blocked emitters are the number-one cause of "the plant just died overnight" calls we get in January.
